Saving Lives:  Ham Operators & Trained Weather Spotters Credited with Early Tornado Warning – Mike Swartz, Jeff Cowall, & Pat Clouse from RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services) & Skywarn – The first warning siren blared at 5:07 PM in Dexter.  26 minutes later a horrific tornado wreaked havoc through the community last Thursday, destroying or damaging more than 200 homes.  Thankfully there were no deaths and no one was seriously injured.  Many are crediting the early alert with saving lives, but how was Washtenaw County Emergency Services able to sound the alarm so quickly?  It’s thanks to a group of brave weather watchers who are trained to report wild weather as it approaches, and in the case of Jeff Cowall, drive straight toward the eye of the tornado.
