EMU Women’s Basketball Team Helps Children in Newtown, Conn. – EMU Coach Tory Verdi – Coach Verdi was born and raised in Connecticut.  His first coaching experiences came at Western Connecticut University and before that at a high school located just a few miles from Newtown, where the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary occurred.  Now the EMU Coach and his team are reaching out to the Newtown community to help the children and their families move forward.  Coach Verdi and his EMU team will work with the Newtown Youth Basketball Association to stage the “Smiles & Basketball” clinic on February 10,
2 p.m.-6 p.m. at Newtown H.S.  If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift to help the team in its trip to Newtown, visit www.emufoundation.org.

Downtown Friday with the Main Street Area Association: Seyfried Jewelers  – Bill Hart, Owner – The big game isn’t the only super experience you can have this Sunday.  Downtown Ann Arbor’s Seyfried Jewelers is offering a super sale with 50% off everything you see in the store.  Started by Fred Seyfried in 1911, brothers Bill and Jim Hart took over as owners in 1978.  Bill tells us what to look for when choosing a diamond, and he explains how watches are making a come back.

Previewing Ground Hog Day – Dick Grant and Woody the Woodchuck, Howell Conference and Nature Center – Pennsylvania may have Phil, but when it comes to predicting whether winter will linger or spring will arrive early, it’s Michigan’s Woody the Woodchuck who is a better prognosticator.  Update:  Woody predicted an early Spring, but so did that pesky Phil in Pennsylvania.

Downtown Friday with the Downtown Association of Ypsilanti: Hamilton Crossing   – Dave Heikkinen, DAY President; Marquan Jackson, Director of Family Self-Sufficiency, Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Communities – In partnership with Washtenaw United Way, EMU’s ISCFC is helping a newly-renovated public housing program make its mark in Ypsilanti.  The work involves providing residents with best practices in social support services.

Go Red For Women –  Dr. Elizabeth Jackson, Cardiologist, University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center –  February is  Heart Month and today is Go Red for Women Day, where you can show support for women’s heart health by wearing red.   The UM Women’s Heart Program is also hosting an Open House on February 6.  The UM remains one of the few hospitals in the country to offer the full scope of treatment in a female specific cardiac clinic that national health leaders say is needed to help women live stronger.
