ALaura Clarkugust 29, 2013:  Tech Thursday: Drive-Ins and the Digital Divide – Laura Clark, Co-Owner, Cherry Bowl Drive-In Theatre in Honor, Michigan – The first drive-in movie theater opened in 1933 in Camden, New Jersey.  At their height there were 4,000 outdoor movie theaters, thanks to the growing interest in automobiles.  Today, there are just 368 drive-ins showing movies in the U.S.  Now the industry faces its biggest challenge, as a new film distribution system is forcing drive-ins to convert to digital projectors and many can’t afford it.

At this year’s Southeast Michigan Science Fair, this teen duo placed first in the high school team category for their invention which allows firefighters to safely battle blazes from outside of a burning fire.  Their invention involves a drill and a way to convert the water into steam.

March 14, 2013:  Tech Thursday: Flying RobotsSkySpecs’ Co-Founders Tom Brady, CFO, and Danny Ellis, CEO There has been a lot of interest in drones lately, but how would you feel about flying robots?  A pair of UM grads and aerospace engineers have developed  autonomous aerial vehicles that they say create a safer, simpler way to inspect structures. This Ann Arbor start-up called SkySpecs recently took the top prize of $50,000 at the Michigan Clean Energy Venture Challenge, as well as third place in the student division of the Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition.
