  • Planting and maintaining flower beds

The MSAA organizes popular downtown events, such as Midnight Madness, Taste of Ann Arbor, Rolling Sculpture Car Show, Halloween Treat Parade, Holiday Parade, and many cultural events. MSAA_1024October 24, 2014: Treat Parade & Halloween in Downtown Ann Arbor – Ann Arbor District Library’s Laura Raynor, Youth Librarian; Library Technicians Kayla Pennoyer, Amanda Schott – It’s the 14th Annual Treat Parade in downtown Ann Arbor on Friday, October 31 from 11 AM-5 PM. Area merchants welcome your little costumed characters to the neighborhood with greets and treats. Black and orange balloons will fly from participating businesses. Get an early start and head to the Ann Arbor District Library on S. Fifth Ave. to get in the mood with a spooky story. Two story times to choose from 9:30am and 10:30 am. All creatures welcome!

MSAA_1010October 10, 2014: Logan Celebrates 10 Years – Ryan Gillies, Co-Owner/General Manager, Logan – Downtown Ann Arbor’s Logan restaurant, is the result of its three owners’ desire to establish a contemporary and elegant restaurant, based on Chef Thad Gillies’ interpretation of “New American” cuisine. Named for Thad’s son, Logan opened in November 2004 with the backing of family and friends.

The Lunch RoomSeptember 19, 2014: Maura Thomson, MSAA Executive Director; Phillis Engelbert, Co-Owner, The Lunch Room – It took nine months, but The Lunch Room is now serving alcoholic beverages. The Kerrytown restaurant received a special redevelopment liquor license. One of the criteria for that is an investment of at least $75,000 in rehabilitating or restoring a business’s property. The Lunch Room prepares high-quality, nutritious vegan food, and demonstrates the versatility of plant-based whole foods.

October 26, 2012:  Main Street Area Association:  Experience Downtown –Liberty Local:  Maura Thomson, MSAA Executive Director; Nicole Ray, Artist/Illustrator – Liberty Local is an annual indoor indie artists’ market showcasing handmade crafts from regional artist vendors whose work embraces the indie spirit – unique, handmade and creative.  It will take place on two floors of the Ann Arbor Art Center’s historic building located at 117 W. October 12, 2012:  Main Street Area Association:  Experience Downtown – The Growing Fitness Business:  Heather Dupuis, Owner, Vie Fitness & Spa – This South Ashley health and fitness center has undergone quite a transformation since it first opened.  Vie started out on the second floor of their downtown space, then it took over the first floor, adding a juice bar and salads, and now the retail side is expanding.  Maura Thomson of the Main Street Area Association calls Vie Fitness & Spa a true downtown success story. August 24, 2012: Main Street Area Association:  Experience Downtown – New Restaurants Take Over Historic Spot:  Maura Thomson, MSAA Executive Director; Executive Chef Gabriel Vera & Manager John Sleamon, Manager of Lena and Habana – If you’ve lived in Ann Arbor long enough, you remember the downtown corner of S. Main & E. Liberty as the home of Cunningham Drug Store and most recently the Parathon.  After the Parathon closed earlier this year, restaurant owners Jon Carlson and Greg Lobdell decided to move Café Habana there (changing its name to Habana) and open up a new restaurant called Lena, as well. August 10, 2012:  Main Street Area AssociationCelebrating the Return of the Plumbers & Pipefitters – Sydney Hawkins, Communications Director, AACVB – Each year our region plays host to hundreds of plumbers and pipefitters who come to Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti for training. The result is full hotel rooms, booked restaurants, and one huge party. Added to the  mix this year is the UA Plumbers & Pipe Fitters 5K and Pub Crawl. 100% of the profits will go to the Semper Fi Fund charity. June 29,  2012: Main Street Area Association – Ann Arbor Family Opening New Downtown Restaurant:  Maura Thomson, MSAA Executive Director; Alan Wang, Owner, Kuroshio –  The corner of Ann Arbor’s East Liberty and South Fourth Avenue has been home to the popular Pretzel Bell restaurant and most recently Champion House, whose owners vacated abruptly.  Now thanks to an Ann Arbor family the spot gets a new lease on life as an “Asian experimental” restaurant. April 7, 2012:  Main Street Area Association– Downtown Real Estate: Maura Thomson, MSAA Executive Director; Jim Curtis, Curtis Commercial– Specializing in downtown Ann Arbor real estate space, Curtis Commercial began in 1947 when George G. Curtis, a Greek immigrant, bought his first building and named it The Curtis Building.           March 30, 2012:  Main Street Area Association – Maura Thomson, MSAA Executive Director; Gary Morgan, Race Director, Ann Arbor Dexter Run; Jon Carlson, Mission Management (Owners of Grizzly Peak, Café Habana) – First run in 1974 as a way to commemorate Ann Arbor’s sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary that year, the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run was originally a 15-mile race. September 9, 2011:  Mark Passerini, Owner, OM of Medicine – The Legality of Medical Marijuana Dispensaries:  Up until last month, the state had somewhere between 400 & 500 medical marijuana dispensaries, 18 of them in Ann Arbor.  Now most have been shut down following a court ruling outlawing sales at medical marijuana dispensaries and banning  patient-to-patient sales.  OM of Medicine’s Mark Passerini  talks about the future of medical marijuana.
