June 25, 2014: Art Trapp, Saline Chamber Executive Director; Scot Graden, Superintendent, Saline Area Schools The Saline School Board approved a $53 million budget last night, using $442,000 from the school fund balance. The district is currently negotiating contracts with its collective bargaining units, and may be able to make adjustments to the budget to bring it into balance by early Fall.

January 22, 2014: Art Trapp, Chamber Executive Director; Jan Witte, Distinguished Young Women of Michigan – 17 contestants from around the state, including Washtenaw County, will be competing for $8,000 in cash college scholarships. The annual scholarship program for high school senior women will be hosted this year at Saline H.S. The Distinguished Young Women of Michigan’s competition is Saturday, January 25 at 6 PM at Saline H.S. Tickets are available at the door.

June 13, 2012:  Saline Area Chamber of Commerce: Art Trapp, Chamber Executive Director; Derrick Haselhuhn, KFC/Taco Bell in Saline - One of the largest KFC franchises in Michigan, Van Masters Management Inc. operates in 22 locations including Saline. Some of their employees have been with VMM more than thirty years, and the store is looking for cooks and cashiers. Derrick tells us about the dual operation of a KFC and Taco Bell in the same location, and says they offer catering and call-ahead ordering.

Superintendent Graden also updates us on this week’s Board of Education meeting where trustees elected to transition to six year board terms. Saline Area Chamber of Commerce Report:  Larry Osterling, Executive Director of the Saline Chamber:  The Bridge Issue – Michigan supporters of a public bridge bill say they remain committed to building a new publicly owned crossing between Windsor and Detroit.  Governor Rick Snyder, champion of the project, says he will still try to get the Michigan Legislature to approve it despite the State Senate’s defeat of the bill last week.  The Saline Chamber is weighing in on the issue as well.

Mikan Corp is a manufacturer of compatible cartridges, a re-seller of computer-related supplies & accessories, and a Hewlett Packard laser printer service provider.  Maggie Stevens started the company in her parents’ basement, until she outgrew that and moved to her current building in Saline in 2004.  Mikan’s largest customer is the University of Michigan.  Business has almost tripled in the last two years.
