Diane Keller, President of the Ypsilanti Area Chamber of Commerce, was on her way to becoming a teacher when she took a detour that lead her to the heart of the Ypsilanti area business community. When she graduated from EMU with a teaching certificate, education jobs were few and far between. Instead, she landed the job as manager of the Ypsilanti Visitors and Convention Bureau, which was part of the Ypsilanti Area Chamber of Commerce at the time, and became the paid coordinator of the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival and other local events that drew visitors to Ypsilanti. “I dealt with so many business people and community organizers,” Keller said. “It was the best learning experience.”

She left the VCB to work public relations with John Fountain Communication, but she continued to promote the Ypsilanti community as part of her job. One of her accounts was the Eastern Energy Campaign, a successful effort to improve attendance at EMU football games to meet a Mid-American Conference requirement.

After taking time off to raise her family, Keller returned to the Ypsilanti Area Chamber as Director of Education. She ran the Chamber’s Educational Foundation and worked on the Zero-to-Five Childhood Initiative, before taking on the role as President.
