Milan: Come and discover this charming city of 5,000 residents and over three hundred businesses. This quaint community is rich with history, from the historic neighborhoods to its designation on the National Ford Heritage Trail. The tree-lined walks and charming street lighting adds character to the business district and welcomes visitors entering from U.S. 23 at exits 25 and 27. Milan’s industrial and commercial base—coupled with its accessibility to major highways, airports, and railways—makes this friendly, warm community a great place to be.

You’re invited to the Milan Chamber’s regular monthly meetings to collaborate and socialize with other business and community leaders. Chamber meetings are held the second Friday of each month at 8:00 AM in the Community Center, 45 Neckel Court.

ChurchillSeptember 15, 2014: Martha Churchill, Milan Historian/City Councilmember – The national TV program, “Monumental Mysteries” recently profiled one of Milan’s treasures, the Friend Hack House. A family

from Milan went to New York in 1885 and stole money through a stock scam.

Olive Friend used the stolen money to build her home, which is now a museum in Milan.

Matt’s Gamer Night, which includes a Mario Kart video game tournament, will benefit Aid in Milan. Matt’s Gamer Night is Friday, August 29, 2014, 6-10 PM at Morning Owl, 9 W. Main St. in Milan. milan_630June 30, 2014: Kris Mason – Mason Farmer was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma in October 2013. He fought a hard battle but passed away on January 16, 2014. Mason’s mom, Sarah Farmer, shared the family’s journey with through Facebook and it touched thousands of people around the world. Milan community members are supporting the Farmer family by organizing a 5k & 1 mile Run/Walk with proceeds going to the family.

February 10, 2014: Cassandra Smith, Owner, CK Antiques and Restoration – CK Antiques and Restoration is located in the historic downtown area of Milan, Michigan. Owner and operator, Cassandra Smith, comes from a family of historians. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies and History. Cassandra is a history teacher, but her primary passion is antiques. CK Antiques also refinishes wood furniture by hand, bringing it back to life as it once looked long ago.

December 30, 2014: Madison Phillips, 6th Grader, Milan Middle School; Karen Phillips, Mom – This Milan Middle School student is described as compassionate, kind, and loving. Her older sister was very ill when she was younger and Madison Phillips was by her side to help her. Madison also participates in Relay for Life and hopes a cure for cancer is discovered, a disease her mother and grandmother have battled. She has been involved in many organizations and activities to help better her community and maintains a GPA of 3.9.

October 21, 2013: Curt Gielow, New Campus Chief Executive, Concordia University Ann Arbor - On September 30, 1962, Lutherans from across Michigan gathered on the grounds of the former Earhart estate in Ann Arbor to install the cornerstone of a building that would soon become the center piece of a new college. The motto inscribed on the cornerstone, “That in All Things Christ Might Have Preeminence.” On September 30, 1963, over 15,000 people gathered to dedicate the newly completed college. Concordia University Ann Arbor celebrates its 50th anniversary, as it transitions into a merger with Concordia University Wisconsin.

October 15, 2012:  Milan Area Chamber of Commerce: Proposal 3 – Mandating Renewable Energy through the State Constitution – Charles Conlen, Director of Renewable Energy,  DTE Energy:  A November ballot proposal seeking a 25% renewable energy mandate would require utility companies like DTE to get 25% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025, even if more efficient sources of clean fuel are available.  If it passes, not only would it be entrenched in the State Constitution, but it also will mean an estimated $10 billion to implement, with utility customers footing the bill.  Click here to learn more about the coalition against Proposal 3, known as CARE – Clean, Affordable, Renewable Energy.

October 1, 2012:   Milan Area Chamber of Commerce: Preserving Milan History Sally Clark, President, Milan Area Historical Society – It was known as the great sugar scandal and it has deep ties to Milan, Michigan. Olive Friend’s husband was a major figure with the New York Electric Sugar Refining Company, and when he died his death was kept a secret to prevent people from selling their stock. The company had claimed that it had an “electric sugar refining machine”, but it was all a fraud. Olive left New York for her hometown of Milan and built what is now known as the historic Hack House, which is preserved today.

April 30, 2012:  Milan Area Chamber of Commerce: Christine Roe, League Administrator/Coach, Milan Youth League - More than 400 kids on forty teams with 80 coaches and numerous volunteers make up the successful Milan Youth League, which was established as a formal Little League Chartered Organization in 1954. There was an era in our history when entire towns would turnout at the local ball field to root on the Little League teams, and that same Americana spirit is still celebrated in Milan.
