Dexter’s official history predates that of the state of Michigan by 13 years, having been founded June 10, 1824, by Samuel William Dexter. Today, Dexter’s village is a thriving community with a strong mix of residential and commercial interests. It boasts excellent schools, good proximity to major highways and a way of life that has held true to the initial vision for the village.

May 23, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Saving Dexter’s Memorial Day Parade – Rotary Club of Dexter’s Steve Feinman, Past President, and Mariah Fink, 2014-15 Co-President -  When longtime organizers of Dexter’s Memorial Day Parade bowed out, the Rotary Club stepped in to keep the tradition going.

May 16, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Company Donates Pet Oxygen Masks – Bernadette Quist, Chamber Executive Director; Dave Wisely, Dexter Firefighter; Michelle Milliken, Marketing Representative, Paul Davis Restoration & Remodeling – Pets are part of the family, so when a tragedy happens at your home and a pet’s life is saved it often makes the news.  Now your pet has a greater chance of survival in a fire thanks to Paul Davis Restoration & Remodeling, which has donated pet oxygen mask kits to the Washtenaw Area Mutual Aid Association to distribute to local fire departments.

May 9, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  The Chick-fil-A Leadercast Bernadette Quist, Chamber Executive Director; Paula Palmer Burns, Past Chamber President – A one-day leadership event featuring the world’s best leaders speaking about the leadership principles that matter most.  The local event is being held at Dexter United Methodist Church.

May 2, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Musical Dexter -  Bernadette Quist, Chamber Executive Director; Dr. Anthony Elliott, Musical Director, Dexter Community Orchestra - Founded in 2005, the Dexter Community Orchestra is dedicated to cultural enrichment through live symphonic music.  It’s a place for amateur musicians to play and an opportunity for families to experience the magic of live classical music.  You are invited to their concert this Sunday, May 5 at 4 PM at Dexter High School, where you will hear competition winner Emma Sandberg performing.

March 28, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Lend Me A Tenor – Bernadette Quist, Chamber Executive Director; Encore Musical Theatre Company’s Tobin Hissong (Tenor Director), and Thalia Schramm (Associate Artistic Director) – Dexter’s renowned Encore Musical Theatre Company is launching its first non-musical production.  The Tony award-winning Lend Me A Tenor, is set in 1934 at the Cleveland Opera Company.

March 21, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Turning Mill Creek into a Trout Stream – Bernadette Quist, Chamber Executive Director; Mike
Mouradian, President, Ann Arbor Trout Unlimited – Efforts are underway to turn Mill Creek in the Dexter area into a flourishing trout stream.  Ann Arbor Trout Unlimited, the group behind the project, is committed to “hands-on” river habitat restoration, and despite the fact that you won’t find many trout populations in southern Michigan due to the warmer waters they are already calling the Mill Creek project a success.  Ann Arbor Area Trout Unlimited is hosting its 7^th Annual Conservation Banquet, Thur., April 11 at Barton Hills Country Club.  Visit www.annarbortu.org.

February 14, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Dexter Relay for Life – Denise Rodriguez, Co-Chair Dexter Relay for Life – The journey to end cancer starts with a single step. The American Cancer Society invites you to take that step by joining the global Relay For Life movement, the world’s largest walk to end cancer. February 7, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Hope & Healing for Military Families – Julie Boyd, M.A., L.P.C., Huron Counseling Services; Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director – Dexter counselor Julie Boyd is offering  assistance for service men and women and their families.  The goal is to have a safe place to talk with others, get support, and learn.  This is part of the Hope and Healing Series offered by Boyd.  Meetings will be held Wednesdays, February 20-March 27 at Dexter United Methodist Church from 7:00-8:30 PM.  For more info, call 734.426.5271.

January 17, 2013:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Sarah Henry, Marketing, Development and 5K Coordinator, Girls on the Run Southeastern Michigan – Inspiring girls to be healthy and confident, Girls on the Run empowers them to boldly achieve their dreams.  The program, which is in most of our area schools, is aimed at 3^rd-8^th graders.  Volunteer coaches are needed for the upcoming season in some of those schools.  Schools in need of a volunteer coach/mentor are Adams in Ypsilanti, South Meadows in Chelsea, and in Ann Arbor – Wines, St. Francis, and Haisley.  Email Lisa@girlsontherunsemi.org or call 734.712.5640.

December 20, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Christmas Luminaria Lighting – Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director; Mariah Fink, Attorney / Luminaria Committee Co-Chair – Dexter community members have put together Luminaria kits and delivered them to parts of the Village to be lit on Christmas Eve.  It’s a tradition that dates back to 1985 in Dexter.

November 29, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Christmas at the Mansion  – Paula Palmer Burns (middle), Chamber Board Member; Julie Knight & Terry Stacey, Dexter Area Historical Society & Museum – “A Toast to Ole St. Nick” is the theme the Dexter Area Historical Society & Museum’s winter fundraiser, Christmas at the Mansion.  The event features festive holiday rooms decorated by local businesses and volunteers, a visit with Santa, hot chocolate and cookies and an opportunity to shop from the Museum’s gift shop.

November 15, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouts  – Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director;  Dexter Girl Scouts’ Debbie Koch, Service Unit Manager, Ina Germain, Gold Award Advisor; & Dianne Singer, Troop Organizer – The Girls Scouts are celebrating 100 years this year!  The program has a strong presence in Dexter, where all 10 girls in Dianne Singer’s troop of senior high school students earned their Gold Award (the equivalent of what the Eagle Scout Award is to the Boy Scouts.)

September 27, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Dexter Bar  Crawl – Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director:  Put together five restaurants, a Bar Crawl Bingo Card, and a free drink, and you have the makings of a great time in Dexter.  The upcoming Dexter Bar Crawl is the first of its kind for the community, and it’s designed to showcase the town’s myriad of restaurants.

August 9, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  New Mill Creek Park – Allison Bishop, AICP, Village of Dexter Community Development Manager / Chamber Board Secretary – It’s been three years since the Village of Dexter began plans for development of the Mill Creek Park after the dam there was removed.  Phase 1 of the $5 million project has been completed and this weekend is the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

August 2, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Dexter Daze - Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director; Karen Bentley, Dexter Daze Chair; Paula Palmer Burns, Chamber President– In 1972, Elaine Owsley and Nancy McLeod began chairing the  first “Discover Dexter Days” for the  Dexter Chamber of Commerce.  The event included  old-time movies, a pie-baking contest, square dancing, and a parade.  Forty years later, Elaine and Nancy will be this year’s Dexter Daze Parade Marshals.

July 26, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Artistica Gallery - Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director; Pam O’Hara, Artistica Gallery Owner – Looking for beautiful and unique art and giftware is as close as downtown Dexter.  This gallery showcases beautiful items crafted by Michigan artists, including paintings, photographs,  jewelry, pottery, blown glass, and much more.

July 19, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Community & School Gardens – Mary Marshall, Dexter Schools Superintendent; Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director; Paul Cousins, Village Trustee – Dexter is on a quest for a healthy community with a new Wellness Center to be built, community walks, and other health-directed activities.  The community and school gardens give Dexter residents an easy way to grow healthy food for their tables.  We also talk with Superintendent Marshall about the recent tornado, her response and the impact that had on the Dexter community.

June 28, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  – Stephen West, Tevye in Encore Theatre’s Fiddler on the Roof – Acclaimed bass-baritone Stephen West has appeared with many of the finest opera companies in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera.  A Professor of Voice at the University of Michigan, Stephen is performing the lead role in Encore Theatre’s production of Fiddler on the Roof.

May 3, 2012:   Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Girls on the Run:  Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director; Sarah Henry, Marketing and Development Coordinator, Girls on the Run on Southeastern Michigan -  Girls on the Run is a life-changing character development program for girls in third, fourth and fifth grade (ages 8-12) that uses the power of running to teach every girl about her personal power and the importance of being healthy and active. The after-school program combines training to participate in a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts and a community service project. This year marks the local organization’s 10^th anniversary.

April 26, 2012:   Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Dexter Wellness Coalition – Abby Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director; Melissa Kesterson, Dexter Co-Motivator; and Matt Pegouskie, Program & Community Resource Manager, Chelsea Area Wellness Foundation – Wellness interventions have been incorporated into the Dexter community, thanks to the 5 Healthy Towns Project. They include a drug drop-off, safe routes to school, and Wellness Walks. A recent walk raised $12,000 for relief efforts following the Dexter tornado. Find out how this interesting collaboration between five towns and area health organizations works.

April 19, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Karl Jennings, Borek Jennings Funeral Home – Chik-fil-A Leadercast: This one-day leadership event features leaders talking about the principles that matter most. Leadercast, which is being hosted locally at Dexter United Methodist Church, is a catalyst for new ideas and better leadership practices. Among this year’s speakers: Tim Tebow, John Maxwell, Soledad O’Brien. In addition, Karl tells us about changes that are ocurring in the funeral home business.

April 5, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Dexter Chelsea Chamber Golf Outing: Abby Erickson Goldberg, Dexter Chamber Executive Director - Some of you have already hit the links and enjoyed a round or two in the nice weather we have been experiencing. You may want to show your stuff at the Dexter Chelsea Chambers of Commerce Golf Outing coming up June 5. This marks the second year the two chambers have banded together to bring this event, showing collaboration can pay off for organizations.

March 29, 2012:   Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Abby Erickson Goldberg, Chamber Executive Director; Paula Palmer Burns, Chamber President; Peter & Andrea Theocharakis, Owners of Dexter’s Pub – Like many of the businesses in the Dexter area, the Dexter’s Pub was a great resource following the tornado which swept through the region. They donated pizzas to the Red Cross and a Fish Fry Dinner to fire fighters who came in to help. Today (Thursday, March 29) the Dexter’s Pub is hosting a Dine to Donate Fundraiser with 15% of each bill donated to the Dexter Tornado Relief Fund.

Talking with the Dexter Chamber earlier that morning, we had no idea what would unfold just hours afterwards. Preserving those master crafts from long ago is the aim of the annual Pioneer Arts Fair sponsored by the Dexter Historical Society.  Note: Due to the recent tornado activity in Dexter, this event has been cancelled. March 8, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce: Executive Director Abby Erickson Goldberg and President Paula Palmer Burns – Michigan Moving Forward: That’s the theme for this year’s Dexter Chamber Annual Dinner Banquet, scheduled for Thursday, March 15 at 5:30 PM at the Ann Arbor Country Club. The keynote address will be given by State Representative Mark Ouimet and the highlight each year is the presentation of annual awards.

March 1, 2012:  Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce:  Coley O’Brien, Owner, Dexter A & W; Paula Palmer Burns, Chamber President - March 1st marks a rite of passage in Dexter.  The Dexter A & W reopens for the season.  Coley O’Brien grew up in Dexter and recalls riding his bike to the A & W as a 10 year-old.  Today he owns it.
