Do we have a so-called safety net that facilitates able bodied Americans sitting on the sidelines and collecting government benefits?
About two weeks ago, Paul Krugman, Nobel laureate economist, wrote an article in the NY Times touting the positive economic gains under President Obama and the boom in the number of jobs. President Obama in his State of the Union address also showcased the economy and job market. But is that the whole story?
The financial crisis and recession exacted a heavy toll on the generation of Americans now entering their 30s. More than 4 years after the end of the recession officially ended 11.5 million Americans are unemployed, many of them for years. Millions more have abandoned their job searches, hiding from the economic storm in school or turning to government programs for support. Do we have a permanently smaller workforce that has created a new normal? Should we be passing new legislation to promote job creation? What is the “Right Thing to do?”
Drunk Driving & The Law – Stacey Washington, Attorney and Counselor: If you are stopped for drunk driving, do you know your rights under the law?
The September unemployment rate was reported at 7.8% down from 8.1% in August and down from 8.3% in July. 7.8% is the lowest rate since July 2009. This was seen as a positive sign that the economy is recovering and that the economic policies of the administration were working. However, there was not a single economist who was forecasting that the unemployment rate would go down—in fact some economists were forecasting 115,000 new jobs and an INCREASE in the unemployment rate to 8.3%. A number of people raised the possibility that the rate was biased and was manipulated for the benefit of President Obama’s re-election bid.
