In the summer of 1995, the only local banking institutions available to Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti residents were from outside the area. A group of prominent business people decided to change that by organizing a local bank. Six million dollars of initial capital was raised in the local community from businesses and professionals. For the third consecutive year, the Bank of Ann Arbor team set new records for earnings, deposits, and assets in 2012. Despite the less-than-robust economy, deposits grew by $107 million to finish the year at $793 million, making Bank of Ann Arbor the third largest bank in Ann Arbor as reported by the FDIC. Strong deposit growth provided the fuel for their commercial team to make more loans to help more businesses in our community grow. And with that their total assets hit $891 million at December 31, 2012, growing by $117 million. In the past year, over 200 organizations and charities received money and/or time from the Bank of Ann Arbor, its directors and staff. Click here to see how they contribute to the richness of life in Washtenaw County and beyond through support of these organizations.

If you only think health insurance when you think of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, they’re okay with that. After all, their roots go back to the first health insurance plans in the U.S. These plans were created nearly a century ago for working people—teachers, miners and lumberjacks who just wanted affordable, quality health care. A lot has changed since then. Health care reform is bringing more change. At the same time, there’s much that hasn’t changed: the need for affordable, quality health care and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s role as a leader in helping Michigan residents get that care. Blue Cross Blue Shield is the largest health insurer in the state and a nonprofit corporation. Experts from Blue Cross Blue Shield join us each Monday at 9:10 AM to explain the latest health care initiatives and what you need to know about health care reform. Well-known restaurants are generally known by signature menu items. Haab’s Restaurant is no exception. A thick-cut New York Strip Sirloin Steak, broiled to perfection, is unquestionably Haab’s most famous item. Haab’s was acclaimed locally in the Ann Arbor News reader poll as “Washtenaw County’s No. 1 steak house” every year until the category was retired. Ironically, the New York Strip Steak is not Haab’s most popular item. The Prime London Broil, as featured in Ford Times Magazine, consistently outsells everything else on the extensive menu. Seafood has also become increasingly popular in recent years, and Haab’s has adjusted its menu to include over 15 fresh and frozen seafood items. In fact, it is not uncommon for customers to proclaim that, although they summer on Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula, they await their return to Haab’s to experience really great whitefish.

Mallek’s Service Station
Mallek’s Service Station began in the 1940s at the very same spot it is located today, where Huron, Jackson, and Dexter Roads converge on Ann Arbor’s westside. Owned by John Mendler since the early-’70s, Mallek’s is still giving that same great service today. They are expert mechanics who really care about their customers and their vehicles. They are great at diagnosing what ails your vehicle and even better at fixing it. And when it comes to service, you’ll love that air is free at Mallek’s and that the guys just may do your gassing up for you. So, don’t even bother getting out of your vehicle. Sit back, relax, and remember what great service is all about at Mallek’s.

Fred Meijer always said, “Customers don’t need us, we need them.” At Meijer, they focus on their customers and thrive by meeting their needs and exceeding their expectations. It was the middle of the Great Depression and groceries were scarce. In 1934, a modest local barber in Greenville, Michigan had a need and saw an opportunity. In an effort to take care of the customers who visited his barbershop, Hendrik Meijer purchased $328.76 worth of merchandise on credit. Together with his 14-year-old son, Fred, they opened North Side Grocery. He renamed his store Meijer’s Grocery. Meijer has always been a leader in finding and using new technology. This includes everything from the introduction of checkout scanners in the 1970s to the decision to stay open 24 hours in the 1980s to the launch of Meijer.com in the 1990s. Their commitment to innovation and taking care of customers has led to continued growth throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. From the 1960s when the company had 26 stores and 4,000 team members in Michigan to today’s 190 plus stores and 60,000 team members in five states, Meijer continues to do business based on the simple philosophy that led Hendrik Meijer in 1934—meeting the needs of customers, team members and the communities they serve. Listen to Meijer’s Healthy Living segment every Saturday at 10:05 AM on 1290 WLBY & online at www.1290WLBY.com. Meijer Healthy Living Adviser Tina Miller shows us how to shop, cook, and eat healthy.
